Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- Many homeowners do their own work around the house but some jobs require a professional. And when a contractor disappeared with one local man's money, he emailed Contact 13's Call for Action volunteers for help.

"Yes it was disappointing. At least let me know what's going on," says Alan Haraldson.

He's frustrated with his latest dealings with a valley contractor.

"We wanted a pocket door put in the library there, so when we had visitors, they could have a little privacy," says Alan.

This Henderson senior says he asked around and neighbors suggested some contractors who had done work in their homes. Alan says he met with a couple different guys and after getting their estimates, he hired one.

"In the end we thought his ideas were good and he seemed to be friendly and capable," says Alan.

This is a copy of a check he gave the contractor back in January for $350. The money was meant to cover the cost of initial supplies, like the new door.

"I called him a couple of times after that. Things were on order. It was just taking time to get the door in. Which I understood," says Alan.

But he says weeks went by with no update.

"The weeks dragged into months and more months and he stopped answering the phone," says Alan.

With more than half a year gone by, Alan says he thought he'd never see his money again. That's when his wife suggested contacting Action News. So Alan emailed us.

And to his surprise, the same day we got in touch with the contractor, Alan got a call about getting his money back.

"He said I can bring it over now or send it in the mail. So I said, just put it in the mail. And we got the check the next day," says Alan.

So here's the Contact 13 bottom line. Do your homework. Alan found out later the contractor he hired wasn't licensed. You can check to find out if a contractor is licensed online. And if all else fails, we've got your back Las Vegas. Contact us and we'll see what we can do to help. Just shoot an email to 13investigates@ktnv.com. For Contact 13, I'm Tricia Kean.
