Contact 13 Mailbag: sweepstakes warning
It's time to reach into our Contact 13 mailbag. You email us questions and we answer them on the air.
Doug sent us a copy of a letter he received. It says: "We have identified $2.3 million in non-disbursed funds that are currently pending payment, but still remain unclaimed. A complete accounting of these funds has been audited, verified and prepared for you."
The letter goes on to ask the recipient to send in a $20 fee, in order to get the money.
Doug, this is a scam. The Better Business Bureau confirms you should never pay a fee or taxes for any sort of funds, prize money or sweepstakes. In fact, the BBB says recipients who send in money typically are added to a mailing list. And all they get are more of the same letters, asking for more money.
