Action News helps local man with utility bill complaint
Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- No one likes getting an unexpected high utility bill. But that's exactly what happened to one Las Vegas man, who says, it wasn't even his bill to pay. So as Contact 13's Tricia Kean reports, that's when he called our Call for Action volunteers for help.
"I'm getting pretty mad. I'm thinking, why would they do this to me," says Eddie Caryl.
He says he couldn't believe it. He recently opened a February utility bill, and saw a total amount due of $926. That included more than $700 under the category "total miscellaneous charges."
"Once I seen that, I'm like what," says Eddie.
So he called the utility company. Eddie says, the company was trying to collect overdue funds from that service address, which would explain that $770 charge.
"They told me it was the other previous tenant's bill, and that I was responsible for it," says Eddie.
He argued, he had put his name on the account after that person had moved out. And for the last 3 months, he had been paying the bill, with no problems or other miscellaneous charges.
"It's not my bill. I'm not responsible for it," says Eddie.
But after numerous phone calls with customer service reps and supervisors, he says he got nowhere.
"They were petty insistent that I had to pay," says Eddie.
That's when he decided to reach out to our Contact 13 Call for Action volunteers. And Eddie says they worked fast.
"Within 5 minutes after hanging up somebody did call, and they said they would take care of the bill," says Eddie.
He says, his only regret is not calling sooner.
"Call Contact 13, they helped me. I'm pleased," says Eddie.
So here's the Contact 13 bottom line: When dealing with customer service from any company, take notes. If you can, use email, that way you have a record of everything. And like Eddie, hold on to your proof of payments made or any receipts.
