Celebrate Nevada Day In Las Vegas

On October 31, 1864 Nevada became the 36th state to join the union.

This joining is reflected in the words "Battle Born" on Nevada's state flag.

Nevadans began celebrating Nevada Day in 1939.

In 2000 the recognized holiday was moved to the last Friday of October as decided upon by voters and the state legislature.

Schools, libraries, state offices, courts and some banks will be closed on Friday October 31 to recognize Nevada Day.

A parade along with several other activities will take place in Carson City to mark the holiday.

The theme for Nevada Day 2008 is "Hollywood in Nevada, Movies and Television."
