Conventions are still coming to Las Vegas but companies are downsizing people and spending.
This week's Magic Apparel convention is one example.
Attendees say instead of using the trip as a working vacation, they plan to get in and get out.
The Convention Authority is now working to promote Las Vegas as a meeting mecca.
One of the tools is a special website, vegasmeansbusiness.com, aimed at corporate clients.
Set up for the Magic Apparel convention on Monday at the exhibit halls was not nearly as hectic as usual.
A local teamster says, this convention is not the only one.
"The show was downsized probably 50%, along with the shoe show that we currently finished at Mandalay Bay was probably 50% smaller," said Adam Dziemieszko.
Attendees started changing their plans long before President Obama's comments about conventions. They're here but they're not spending as much and they're not staying as long.
"We spent a lot less money on preparing. We created less samples," said Vin Seong.
"This time we're here for the show right when it starts, and we're leaving right at the end of the show, so we have scaled back in terms of our vacation time and what have you, " said Timoteo.
Less time spent means less money spent which can mean bad news for Nevada's economy.
Even with overcast skies, at least one exhibitor has a sunny outlook.
