Nevada's jobless rate skyrocketed to 7.6% in October, the highest it's been since May, 1985.
This marks the sixth consecutive month for dismal jobless figures.
Nevada's tourism, retail, home and commercial construction industries continue to suffer from the nation's economic downturn.
State employment officials don't expect a boost from the holiday season, saying retailers are reluctant to hire temporary workers if shoppers will be reluctant to spend.
And they predict jobless rate could rise as high as 8.6 % in 2009.
