Watch What Company You Work From Home For

Whether it is the faltering economy or the urge to go green, more and more people want to work from home nowadays.

But officials warn, be careful which company you go with.

Rhonda Lesher loved her job as a nurse, but hung up her scrubs when she got tired of dumping her paycheck into her gas tank.

Once you sent in money, a company was supposed to mail you a packet with everything needed to start on mailing jobs.

Rhonda says the packets were a waste and the jobs were not what she expected.

The Better Business Bureau reports that complaints about in-home offers nearly doubled between the first and second quarter of this year.

It is warning people about a new type of scheme about rebate processing jobs.

"They may buy software. They may buy training materials. What the individual is required to then do in most cases is sell ads to bring other people into the scheme," explained one official. 

There are some legit jobs out there though.

Robyn Spyzman is the author of a book on working from home.

She says virtual customer service representatives are one of them.

"You can take incoming calls for a large company, or even a small company, and help field those customer service concerns," said Robyn. 

Rhonda ended up landing a customer service position with Alpine, working 25 to 30 hours a week and she gets to choose her schedule.

"The benefits have been great because I am not spending money on gas and I am not having to commute anywhere," said Rhonda.

The BBB says that most of the people caught up in those rebate processing schemes never got their money back.
