Nevada Power Foundation Awards "Kids To Kids" $25,000

Posted:

Las Vegas, Nevada - Spread the Word Nevada: Kids to Kids, is the recipient of a $25,000 grant awarded by the Nevada Power Foundation Committee.

The grant will allow Kid to Kids to continue serving the at-risk children in the Clark County School District by providing new and gently used books to sixteen local elementary schools.

After an initial distribution in which the children receive five books, they then select one additional book each month to add to their home libraries.

Further literacy outreach opportunities are provided to the children and their families through the Breakfast with Books program, and the Books & Buddies program, which partners community volunteers with students to practice reading skills and encourage a love of books.

Nevada Power Foundation has been a strong supporter and community partner of Kids to Kids.

Since 2001, the foundation has contributed a substantial amount of financial resources to help promote children's literacy through Kids to Kids.

Doretha Graham Easler, Community Relations Manager, stated, "Nevada Power supports Spread the Word Nevada, Inc.- Kids to Kids because we recognize the value of providing books to children as an effective way to promote language and literacy growth. Our partnership supports the community by assisting families to understand the importance of literacy in their lives, while at the same time helping their children to value reading."

Nevada Power is an operating subsidiary of Sierra Pacific Resources, proudly serving more than 750,000 electric customers in Las Vegas, North Las Vegas, Henderson, other communities (and unincorporated areas) of Clark County as well as a small portion of Nye county.

Kids to Kids, a flagship program of Spread the Word Nevada, Inc., a nonprofit, 501(c) (3) corporation, serves at-risk children in southern Nevada and helps them create home library collections of books to read and share with family members.

While developing a love of reading, these libraries promote future academic achievement and higher self-esteem, which impacts lifelong success.

Since 2001, the program has distributed over 960,000 books and has served more than 89,000 children in the Las Vegas valley and Clark County School District.
