Congresswoman Titus taking action after You Ask, We Investigate story

Updated:

Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) - When You ask, We Investigate and now a state lawmaker is taking action on one of our stories.

Viewer Brenda Johnson emailed Action News about a plot of land next to her community. She said it was filled with trash that's been dumped there for years.

Brenda said no one was taking care of it. Congresswoman Dina Titus saw our story, and now she's asking for answers.

The lot next to Brenda Johnson's neighborhood near Las Vegas Boulevard and Silverado Ranch isn't as clean as she would like it to be.

"As our taxes go up, so does the trash," said Brenda.

"It's getting outrageous," Art Cozad, the president of Brenda's Homeowners' Association, agrees.

He said it's been like this for years and nothing has been done.

"We have had no action whatsoever," Art says, "We have no clue why they wont help us out."

So they asked Action News to investigate. Last week, Action News found out the land is owned by the Federal Bureau of Land Management or BLM.

That caught the attention of another one of our viewers.

"Now we know it's the BLM, we can get on 'em, and get them to take some action," Congresswoman Dina Titus told us in a sit down interview at our Action News studio.

The congresswoman saw our story and took action.

She wrote a letter to the BLM asking them to make the clean-up a quote, "near-term priority."

She says just putting up these "no dumping" signs, isn't enough.

"They have posted "no dumping" signs and that's fine, but it doesn't clean up the problem that's there," Titus said.

So Action News called the BLM for comment. A representative said on the phone that they have one person coordinating all their clean-ups, but that "it's on the radar, and we will make every effort to clean it up as soon as possible."

The representative says the plot of land is on their schedule "on or after May 15th."

"I hope that they will do it on the 15th. We'll certainly be out there with our office helping," Titus told us.

The congresswoman says, she's just grateful this issue was brought to her attention.

"I credit Brenda and Art from the Homeowners' Association nearby for getting this going and so we'll be working with them to make sure that happens," she said.

In our first story Brenda and Art also asked about a fence getting put up.

The BLM said that's a matter of funding, which right now, they don't believe they have. Action News is going to stay on top of this and let you know what happens.
