You Ask update: FL band rocking for Sean Semon's heart

Posted:

When you ask, we investigate and this story we have been following for months. It's one man's tale of strength, as he finds a way to pay for a heart transplant that's not covered by his insurance plan.

A band from the other side of the country with a special connection to what Sean Semon is going through, is giving back the best way they know how.

The sound of the band is what you might call, hard core. But, behind the rock of Holes and Hearts is a lot of soul, that doesn't just come from the lyrics.

This band believes their actions speak louder than their words.

"I want to prove to the people that they can make a difference and save a life," 12-year-old Riley Macek told Action News.

"The message too, is, never give up," 14-year-old Casey Macek says about their song "It's just a broken heart."

The brothers create the hard rock sound of "Holes and Hearts". They're dedicating their song "It's just a broken heart" to a Las Vegas man.

"This guy, Sean Semon, he needs his life saved right here," explained Casey.

All the money from the sale of the song will go to a cause that we've told you about before.

"It's not a matter of if, it's a matter of when my heart completely gives out," Sean Semon told us last fall. He's only 33, but his doctor had just told him he only had a year left to live, unless he can get a heart transplant.

Sean's insurance plan doesn't cover the $700,000 surgery.

Action News caught up with him again last month, while he was trying to find ways to raise money.

"If everybody in Las Vegas donated $1, I'd have more than enough money to get my transplant," Sean said.

That plea struck a chord for Casey and Riley. Their grandparents were vacationing in Las Vegas, and saw our story on Sean. So the band looked at it online in Florida.

When they heard Sean say that if everyone just donated a dollar he could live, the boys got their charitable idea: one dollar, one song, one life.

So they made a YouTube video, asking for donations.

"Now is your time to do something important, do something great, save someone's life," Riley says on the video.

They're asking their fans to give just a dollar to Sean's cause and offering a song in return.

"We are giving 100% of the proceeds from the sale of our song "Just a broken heart" to help his life saving surgery," Casey says in the video.

"This will be the most important dollar that ever comes out of your pocket," Riley emphasizes.

Even though the Macek brothers are far away from Sean, his suffering hits close to home.

"I was born with a very large hole in my heart," Riley tells Action News.

It's a challenge for which they named their band: Holes and Hearts.

"I was lucky enough to have 2 successful open heart surgeries before I was even 1-year-old," Riley recalls.

Riley survived his heart issues, with financial help from his insurance company. The brothers just want to see the same for Sean.

"It's the greatest feeling in the world that you're doing something right and that you're righting the wrong, you're making the world a better place," Riley tells us.

Even though the band's never met Sean, Casey has a career idea for the criminal justice major, once when he gets back on his feet:

"He can be our body guard on the road one day," Casey says with a smile.

So far "Holes and Hearts" has raised about $100 for Sean's cause.

Sean says his doctor told him he no longer has to be on oxygen 24/7, and, he's feeling a lot better. You can also keep up with Sean on Facebook. Click here for a link to his cause site.
