LAS VEGAS, NV - The Clark County District Attorney's office is offering a limited amnesty program for parents who owe child support, and have bench warrants issued for their arrest, and / or suspended driver's licenses.
District Attorney, David Roger, says it's a way to give parents a chance to catch up.
There are more than 85,000 cases of child support in Clark County, almost 800 of which are in bench-warrant status, more with parents who have suspended driver's licenses.
But theoretically, the "Home for the Holidays" program could reduce the number of wanted debtors to zero.
Two things mean the most to Missy Means: her children.
[Child support is] absolutely essential, or otherwise we wouldn't be able to take care of the day to day needs of our children," says Missy.
That may soon be easier, through the new initiative, helping solve a burden Missy bears far too often: the fact that the father of Missy's kids doesn't always pay child support.
Roger says that on Novermber16th, his office will begin "Home for the Holidays," a 5 day program that allows limited amnesty for parents to negotiate a one-time payment for outstanding child support debts.
"They can come in, and make a payment, get their warrant quashed, but if they don't take advantage of that opportunity, then Monday morning, we'll be out there looking for them," says Roger.
The program applies to:
-non-custodial parents who have bench warrants and/or a suspended driver's license.
-bring ID
-proof of current income
-and cash, money order, or cashier's check.
"Just one time a year for the holidays is really not enough for the children. We need to be able to take care of the kids all year round," says Missy.
That's exactly why the county will gauge whether the program is worth implementing more often.
Clark County got the idea from other municipalities around the country where the program has already proven successful.
That's why, under the initiative, our D.A.'so ffice is also willing to work with cases from other jurisdictions.
