The Silver State is still waiting for the next batch of the injectable H1N1 vaccine. In its first shipment the Southern Nevada Health District received 17 thousand doses. But doctors with a private medical practice in the valley are asking why they received a minimal number of doses for their patients.
Private providers with patients in the priority groups have received about 100 doses. According to health officials it's all a matter of supply and demand. Since the swine flu vaccine is still limited across the nation, the shot is being mainly distributed at county health clinics, like it's being done here locally at the Southern Nevada Health District.
But Dr. Ken Misch says his patients are vulnerable children and insists that private practices in the community should have been at the top of the list for distribution sites in order to reduce the spread of the virus.
"We've had hundreds of kids come in with the H1N1 virus and had no vaccine available. We then received the shipment and got 100 doses, but in an office our size that's nothing,"Dr. Misch added.
The Nevada State Health Department did point out that many private practices don't have enough room in their facilities to adequately store a large amount of doses. But while the CDC determines the number of vaccines each state will get, private practice physicians are being told to remain patient as more shots become available.
