Living with scorpions is putting some ticked off tenants on edge. They say their anxieties are growing as building managment continues to ignore the problem.
Residents aren't sure if the infestation is confined to their building at the Andover Place Apartments, near UNLV. They are sure that the 8-legged creatures are living in their walls!
Feeling like they had no place to turn, residents contacted Action News for help.
"What does it take for somebody to just care and do what is their responsibility in the first place, which is the safety of their tenants?," asked resident Steve Duesterbeck.
Duesterbeck is part of a growing petition of angry neighbors who want management to step up to the plate.
"I hope this wakes them up. I mean you're talking about safety. There was a young child that was already bit by a scorpion. This is serious," he added.
Tenants have started to collect the creepy critters, both dead and alive, to prove their point.
They had the proof, and we had the questions for management.
Action News Reporter Drew Karedes asked the assistant manager at the complex, "so, you are taking these complaints seriously, because these residents say they are living in fear?"
Assistant manager Jessica Munoz responded, "I don't know. Who is these residents?"
We showed her the petition of frustrated tenants and listed the apartments who say they're seeing the scorpions.
"It is a problem that is being taken care of on a daily basis," said Munoz. "It is being taken care of sir, that's all I can say."
Our cameras soon spotted Terminix around the building in question.
Exterminators tell Action News this is the first time their company has visited the property!
"All of a sudden, Terminix is here. Just coincidental timing right," said resident Steve Duesterbeck.
Residents are hoping this is the first step in taking care of the problem. Many say they wish it was as simple as packing up and moving elsewhere.
"A number of us found out that the reason our apartments were vacant is because there was a problem, and that's why they left in the first place," said Duesterbeck.
Others, hope the scorpions start to disappear for the sake of their young children.
"If I dose off, immediately I wake up with nightmares. This is not something that we can afford to live with," said resident Nazmul Ahsan.
Exterminators say getting rid of scorpions is not an easy process, and typically spraying is not enough to get rid of the pests.
One exterminator tells us these residents may have to be moved to different units, while the situation is assessed.
